Commemoration of Samuel & Henrietta Barnett

 

 

 

Samuel & Henrietta Barnett were social reformers.  Samuel was vicar of St Jude’s Church, Whitechapel, devoted to the religious and cultural development of the East End of London.  Henrietta founded Hampstead Garden Suburb, the church there taking the name of St Jude.  The Suburb is part of the Garden City movement, founded in 1907, after Letchworth

 

and before Welwyn Garden City.  Today is the 105th anniversary of Samuel’s death.
